RIDGEFIELD PARK, NJ February 28, 2018 —In February 2018 The Fire Pit Grill in Ridgefield Park, NJ was voted number three on Yelp’s “Best 10 Burger’s in Hackensack” list. Bergen Monthly™ went behind the scenes at this burger joint to see just how they earned their near-five star Yelp rating and reviews like this one:
“Always hunting for great places, we drove from the Jersey Shore to try this place. Tony is definitely a master of his kitchen. Great burgers. This place deserve no less than five stars. Definitely worth the detour if you are driving around.
This place opens at noon and close when there is no more fresh food. Tony does not freeze anything. Way to go!” — Simon T., Tinton Falls, NJ
The Fire Pit Grill opened its doors in 2011 on Main Street in the Village of Ridgefield Park, NJ. It has since expanded to its new larger location at 9 Mount Vernon Street. Since then it has become the place to be after school for fries and sliders and a top spot for burger connoisseurs.
Fire Pit, as it is affectionately known by its customers, is owned and operated by former auto finance manger turned chef, Tony Vera. Vera has been earning his chops in the kitchen since he was 10 years old at his mother’s bakery in Argentina, south America. Vera who now lives in Ridgefield Park runs the restaurant with help from his wife and his father-in-law.
When asked what his secret to a great burger is, Vera responded: “I buy fresh meat everyday, so the (Angus) beef is never frozen.” He went on to tell us that he also changes his deep fryer’s oil every three days and only uses salt and pepper for seasoning. “It’s all about quality ingredients” he says.
After this Bergen Monthly™ writer tasted a half-pound cheddar bacon burger wrapped in lettuce with a side of well-done sweet potato fries, it was clear why customers are willing to visit The Fire Pit Grill from places near and far. Although tied with the perfection of the food was the excellence in customer service. The family runs a great restaurant offering a very personal customer experience as customers can build their own burgers, and before too long Chef Tony can be seen reciting the orders of regulars that he knows by name, by heart.
The Fire Pit Grill is a staple in Ridgefield Park, that lost the likes of its legacy Italian eatery Luka’s when they moved to a space with more parking in neighboring Bogota. Other local burger spots receiving a spot on Yelp’s 10 Best Burger list were The Habit Burger Grill in River Edge and Teterboro coming in at numbers five and six, respectively. For a corporate-run fast food chain The Habit makes a great burger with lots of customizable options and also provides great service via their very well-trained staff.
All in all, The Fire Pit Grill has all the taste (and then some) of a huge burger joint with all of the charm, intimacy, and character of a classic boutique burger shop. This charming hole-in-the wall gets five stars for taste, service, quality, and ambiance – it’s a true family-run neighborhood grill with excellent service and even better food.
